Do You Have An Emergency Plan In Place?

Posted by Kathy Speaker MacNett on September 30, 2011

The recent water main break in the City of Harrisburg caused me to rethink the emergency planning process.  (We will not comment on the suggestions that beavers actually chewed through the existing water pipe!)  In our law office, we were fortunate enough to only have to close for a portion of one day because our staff could leave the area.  In the interim, we were fortunate enough to obtain distilled and bottled water to meet immediate needs.  However, if the water break had lasted longer, it would have been difficult to continue the uninterrupted practice of law on a longer basis.  The Commonwealth, as you may be aware, brought in portable toilets.  Most businesses, however, were operating without the normal sprinkler systems, and relying on the Harrisburg Fire Department's limited supply of pumper trucks.

The converse situation could have been even more trying.  Could you have coped if staff were not able to leave your offices due to natural or man-made disaster? Under such a scenario did you have supplies of water, food, basic first aid supplies and perhaps bleach available for some limited period of time.

We were all relatively lucky this time around, giving us an opportunity to develop or tweak emergency plans before we really need to implement the same.
